Meet Tim, AKA #hashtagthecowboy

4.14.20 | Theresa May

Amidst this time of chaos and insecurity, it’s safe to say that those of us that are healthy and working have adjusted our routines accordingly to preserve some normalcy in our lives. Many of us are working from home – some are working AND teaching from home, and some of us are wishing we could tell our pets to not get used to us always being around.

During these past few weeks, we have observed how businesses have adjusted their voice since COVID-19. While we are lucky enough to keep doing what we love, across the nation, some are finding themselves taking on roles that aren’t necessarily in their scope of work.

One business that has made the best out of these circumstances is the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma.

Before they closed their doors, the National Cowboy Museum’s social media was managed by an in-house marketing team. They’re active on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to keep museumgoers intrigued in learning more about their Western roots. Since their temporary closure, the National Cowboy Museum’s social media has been handled by their head of security, Tim.

Tim doesn’t quite understand social media, but he’s having fun with it – posting selfies with artwork, writing out the word ‘hashtag’ instead of using a ‘#’ in his captions and using the occasional ‘Lol!’ in his captions – because he knows how funny he is.

Tim’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In fact, his posts get thousands of likes, whereas before, their posts would get a few hundred. His introduction to managing the museum’s social media was on March 17th and was accompanied by his headshot: a wide-brimmed-cowboy-hat and bolo-tie-wearing, smile-from-ear-to-ear picture of Tim. This post got 54k likes on Twitter, 17k likes on Instagram, and 3k likes on Facebook.

In a time where staying away from your loved ones is a way to show you care, social media has become more of an outlet than ever. In the brief time that he’s been managing the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s social media, Tim has connected with people in a genuine way. Tim is the social follow we never knew we needed, but he is a perfect representation of the connection and humanity we’re seeking during this time.

At the end of all his posts, Tim signs off with ‘Thanks, Tim.’ I would like to say thanks, Tim, for making me smile!
